bereavement

Dear Milton Families,

As you are aware, we had a medical emergency with one of our staff members at James F. Baugher Elementary School this morning. It is with profound sadness that we share with you the passing of 2nd grade teacher, Sonya Ferguson. Sonya was a treasured member of our Milton family whose dedication and love for her students touched countless lives. Her absence will be profoundly felt within our school community.

Throughout the day, our top priority was supporting our students and school staff. Our school crisis team including school counselors, social workers, psychologists and extended community support staff were on-site to provide comfort and assistance. I am extremely grateful to all the wonderful staff members who immediately came and supported Baugher Elementary School during this very difficult time.

While most students were aware that there was a situation in the building, we did not provide any specific details. As parents and guardians, we believe it is important for you to share this type of news with your children as you see best. Should you have an immediate concern for your student, the care professionals of the CMSU TAPline are available, right now, at 1-800-222-9016. If you feel your child may need specific support during the school day, please reach out to the main office at your student's school building tomorrow morning.

School based supports will continue to be available in all buildings. Baugher Elementary will have an increased presence with additional supports provided by our staff as well as the CSIU crisis team.

We ask that you hold Ms. Ferguson's family, all of her students she impacted throughout her career, and our school community in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

With deepest sympathy,

Dr. John Bickhart

MASD Superintendent
